Article summary

Power BI interview questions for a finance analyst should test whether a candidate can turn source records into a reliable answer. A polished dashboard is not enough if totals are wrong, data is stale or the analyst cannot explain a measure. The prompts below are original practice questions, not questions supplied by an employer. Use the actual vacancy to decide how much modelling, DAX, data preparation and finance-process knowledge to practise.

Six questions worth answering aloud

  1. What is one row in your fact table: a transaction, a daily balance or a monthly summary? Why does that grain matter before you sum amounts?
  2. How did you clean dates, account IDs and status values before building visuals? Which changes belong in Power Query rather than a report measure?
  3. How are your transaction and date or branch tables related? What check would reveal an unexpected many-to-many match or duplicated total?
  4. What does your DAX measure count or sum, and how does a report filter change its result? Can you explain the numerator and denominator of a rate?
  5. When was the semantic model last refreshed, and how would you distinguish a successful refresh from complete and correct source data?
  6. How would you explain a variance to a finance manager while separating a confirmed cause from an untested hypothesis?

Worked case: the settled-payments card is too high

Imagine a fictional CSV with four rows. Reference A101 is INR 1,000 and settled; A102 is INR 500 and pending; B201 is INR 800 and settled; B201 appears a second time as INR 800 and settled. A simple sum of settled rows is INR 2,600. A control file that expects one final record per unique reference totals INR 1,800. The difference is INR 800. The first question is whether B201 is a duplicate extract row, a valid second event or a data-model join error. Do not delete it simply because the larger number looks wrong.

Model answer: investigate before changing the card

A careful candidate would show the source rows, define whether a record represents a payment or a status event, inspect the unique key and load steps, and compare the card's filter context with the control file. If the source owner confirms that the second B201 row is a duplicate extract, document the approved deduplication rule and retest the INR 1,800 total. If it represents a legitimate event, the model may need a separate event table and a rule for selecting final payment status. The answer is about evidence and grain, not memorising one DAX expression.

Power Query, measures and refresh: what to say

Microsoft documents Power Query custom columns as transformations defined before data enters the model, while measures are calculated as needed and respond to report selections. For this case, prepare stable source fields and data types before modelling, then define a clearly named settled-amount measure whose filters can be explained. Microsoft also notes that refreshing a semantic model queries sources and updates dependent reports. A completed refresh does not by itself verify that the source extract contained every expected payment or that relationships did not duplicate rows.

A five-point self-check for your practice answer

  • I stated the business question and the grain of every source table.
  • I reconciled row count and amount to a trusted control before explaining the chart.
  • I separated a possible duplicate, a join problem and a valid status event as different hypotheses.
  • I explained what Power Query, relationships, measures and refresh each contribute.
  • I gave a clear next check, named the data owner and did not claim an employer project was my own.
Are these actual Power BI interview questions from a bank?

No. They are original practice prompts for finance-reporting roles. Employers choose their own assessments and data-access rules.

Should a fresher put real customer or bank data in a portfolio?

No. Use fictional data or an approved public sample, and remove confidential fields, credentials and hidden report pages before sharing any file.
