Article summary

A finance operations assessment can test how you organise records, investigate differences and explain a controlled next step. This practice test gives you a small fictional dataset and a review standard you can reproduce. It is a Centaur learning exercise, not a leaked employer assessment, certification exam or statement about any company's hiring process. Allow up to 90 minutes if useful; that time budget is our suggestion.

Instructions and scope

Treat the two exports below as separate source versions at the same fictional reporting cut-off. Every amount is in USD; there are no foreign-exchange conversions. Each row has a source row ID so that repeated payment references remain visible. No settlement confirmation, fee policy, adjustment approval or accepted ownership is supplied. Do not add those facts to your answer.

The questions

  1. Record each source's row count and total before transforming anything.
  2. Find repeated payment references and explain why one matching amount cannot establish a unique match.
  3. Compare references and amounts. Separate clean matches, an amount break, duplicate ambiguity and source-only references.
  4. Build an exception register with source row IDs, observed facts, unknown cause, owner to confirm and next request.
  5. Reconcile the net difference to the separate issues without deleting a duplicate or posting an adjustment.
  6. Write a handoff of no more than 120 words. State whether settlement or a correction has been authorised.

You may use Excel or another spreadsheet to organise the data. A handwritten control check is also useful for this small population. If AI assists with a formula or note, keep the draft and record how you verified it. The reviewer should be able to follow your calculation without depending on the assistant's confidence or a screenshot of a coloured dashboard.

Worked answer: counts, totals and classification

The gateway has six rows totalling USD 590.00. The ledger has five rows totalling USD 515.00. The net gateway-minus-ledger difference is USD 75.00. A101 and A103 match uniquely on reference and amount. A102 differs by USD 5.00. A104 is ambiguous because gateway rows G4 and G5 repeat the same reference and amount against one ledger row. A105 is gateway-only and A106 is ledger-only.

Reference-level review without silently removing source rows
ReferenceObservationNext check
A101 / A103Two clean reference-and-amount matchesRetain the source links; matching does not itself prove settlement
A102Gateway 250.00, ledger 245.00Obtain supported amount/fee/timing evidence; do not assume a USD 5 fee
A104Two gateway rows of 60.00 versus one ledger row of 60.00Resolve whether repetition is a duplicate export, distinct event or missing detail
A105Gateway-only 40.00Check ledger scope, timing and authorised event history
A106Ledger-only 30.00Check gateway scope and source provenance

The difference can be explained arithmetically as 5 + 60 + 40 − 30 = USD 75.00. That bridge explains the net difference; it does not authorise removing G5, netting unrelated cases or updating the ledger. At reference level there are two clean matches and four exception references. Both original gateway rows for A104 stay in the evidence population until the repeated-reference issue is resolved.

A model handoff

Score the work and review the mistakes

Original 100-point self-review rubric
AreaPointsEvidence to look for
Source preservation and totals20Six versus five rows and totals of 590 and 515
Matching and classification30Two unique matches and all four exception references
Control judgement25No silent deduplication, guessed fee, unsupported settlement or posting
Evidence and handoff20Traceable rows, open questions and actionable requests
Verification record5Manual spot checks and disclosure of any AI assistance

A high arithmetic score does not excuse an unsafe conclusion. If you deleted a source row, invented approval or marked an ambiguous case as settled, correct that reasoning before presenting the work. There is no advertised pass mark or accredited result. Reattempt the case with changed amounts to check whether you understand the method rather than memorising the answer.
