Article summary
BA and BSc graduates can explore finance roles when an employer accepts their degree and they can demonstrate the required skills. The transition is not identical for everyone: a statistics graduate may already have quantitative experience, while a humanities graduate may bring research, writing and communication strengths. Both still need to learn the financial process behind the job. This guide focuses on bridging that gap rather than treating a non-commerce degree as either a barrier or an automatic qualification.
Which finance roles may accept a broader degree background?
- Banking service and operations: record updates, service requests, document checks and controlled hand-offs.
- Payments operations: transaction status, exception queues, disputes and reconciliation support.
- KYC and customer due diligence: information review, missing-document follow-up and case notes under policy.
- Finance process support: accounts payable or receivable, data checks and reporting preparation where employer criteria permit.
- Business or product operations: process mapping, data quality, customer issues and cross-team coordination.
These are possibilities to research, not evidence that every employer accepts BA or BSc graduates. A role called analyst may require accounting, economics, statistics, programming or prior experience. Check the required degree and experience in each current posting before investing in training.
Build the missing finance foundation
For an operations route, start with the meaning of a transaction, its source record, the expected outcome and the control that detects a mistake. Learn basic financial statements and how to read an amount, date, reference, account, status and exception. Then practise Excel filters, lookups and simple reconciliation on invented data. If the target role is analytical, add the accounting, statistics or coding it explicitly requires. A general certificate is less useful than evidence that you understand the work.
| Starting strength | Possible role question | Practice evidence |
|---|---|---|
| BA writing or research | Can you document an onboarding exception clearly? | A fictional case note separating facts and missing evidence |
| BSc quantitative work | Can you test a reporting difference? | A spreadsheet with an explained variance |
| Either degree | Can you follow a controlled payment process? | A process map with an exception and escalation point |
A safe portfolio case for a non-commerce graduate
Invent five payment records and five ledger records. Deliberately make one transaction appear a day later and one amount differ. Identify the exact reference, amount and date on each side. Classify the timing item separately from the unresolved amount difference, document the evidence needed and stop before inventing a resolution. This shows method and restraint. Label the exercise fictional; never use customer or employer data without permission.
How to search and apply
- Choose one role family. Collect several employer-origin vacancies in your target city or remote-work market.
- Mark degree eligibility, essential tools, training, shift, location and any sales targets.
- Match each requirement to existing coursework, a truthful internship example or a small fictional portfolio task.
- Close the two most repeated gaps, then write a CV summary about the work you can show rather than a vague interest in finance.
- Apply through verified career channels and ask what output the team expects in the first months.
Pay and course decisions
Salary cannot be inferred from BA or BSc alone. Compare genuine offers for the same role, city and experience level, including fixed and variable components and commuting or relocation costs. A training provider should show which role tasks its syllabus covers, how work is assessed, the total fee and written career-support terms. Centaur's current six-week Financial Operations Masterclass is one BFSI operations program open to graduates from different fields under its stated criteria; it does not guarantee a named role or salary.
Can a BA graduate enter banking without a commerce degree?
Some vacancies accept graduates from any discipline. Others require a specific subject or prior experience. The employer's current criteria decide eligibility.
Should a BSc graduate learn coding to work in finance?
Only when target roles require it or a defined project benefits from it. Many operations roles emphasise process, accuracy, controls and spreadsheets, while analytics roles may need stronger technical skills.
